THE SCIENCE BEHIND SWIM LANZAROTE OPEN WATER COACHING
HOW WE TAKE YOUR SWIMMING
TO THE NEXT LEVEL
ANXIETY MANAGEMENT
What is anxiety? A fear of the unknown, a fear of the known, fish, deep water, or a fear of failure? Some of the feelings we experience are linked to difficulty in getting breath, tightness in the chest, a very rapid heartbeat, sweating, tingling or numbness, faintness, rigid muscles, cramps, and sudden emotional outbursts. But how can we deal with anxiety—whether before an open water swim race, a triathlon, or even just entering a new body of water?
We work closely with you from both our base here in the Canaries and remotely to increase your confidence and give you the skills and knowledge to manage anxiety.
STROKE CORRECTION AND TECHNICAL SWIM STRUCTURE
The most misunderstood aspect of swimming is choosing the right stroke for the right purpose. Many swimming teachers still rely on outdated methods, and numerous triathlon coaches suggest quick fixes instead of addressing the root cause of the problem. Meanwhile, many seasoned swimmers focus primarily on paddle work.
All of this can lead to poor technique, injury, wasted energy, and a Misunderstanding of the basic principles of moving efficiently through water.
We treat you as an individual—your height matters, your body matters, and your confidence matters. We work with you to keep you injury-free while helping you understand the importance of posture, body position, and how to use the water to your advantage.
OCEAN ENVIRONMENT AND OPEN WATER SAFETY
For some, the ocean, lake, river, or sea is a mysterious beast—full of danger and anxiety. Our open water system coaches you through every aspect of open water swimming. Paul, a national beach lifeguard trainer and assessor, surfer, beach lifeguard, and open water specialist, has developed a comprehensive plan to introduce you to tides and tidal movement, lateral drift, rip currents, and other water conditions that will help you achieve your best swims.
From guiding many Ironman Lanzarote athletes to their fastest swims on the course to planning safe open water crossings, safety is always our top priority.
OPEN WATER SKILL SET
The open water skills we coach are designed around your arena. An essential part of your open water experience is mastering breathing techniques, sighting, drafting, buoy turns, rollovers, changes of pace, attacking, and leading.
Make your next swim a game of cat and mouse—learn to confuse, disorient, and swim the swim of your life, all while using less energy and commanding the water like never before.
GOAL SETTING
Many of us struggle to set achievable goals. We aim high, only to feel like we’ve failed from the start—it’s the New Year plan that never gets finished.
We’ll work with you to set realistic, focused goals and give you a clear path to progress. With open communication throughout, you’ll have the freedom to ask questions, shift your focus, and move through different phases of your swimming journey.
Which race? What technique? What skill? And most importantly—where next?
RACE PLAN AND EVENT TACTICS
Heading into any event or race can be a daunting experience—some even describe it as a kind of delicious fear. But with knowledge comes confidence, and planning is everything. Once your race plan is in place and your tactics are established, you can approach the day with a clear, conscious understanding of how to execute it—and how to adapt when things don’t go as expected.
This is your full race-day picture: from NOP (Normal Operating Procedure) and EAP (Emergency Action Plan) to post-race reporting, all in one. After working through your strategy and helping facilitate your event, we’ll review the experience and put a follow-up plan in place to guide your continued progress.
SESSION PLANNING
The downfall of any athlete—or salesman—is waking up and thinking, “OK, who shall I call today?” Without structure, progress stalls. That’s why a focused plan and smart time management are invaluable.
We’ll provide you with a tailored structure to follow over a set period, targeting both technical challenges and corrective drills, while integrating endurance work to support consistent, measurable improvement.
ADVANCED VIDEO ANALYSIS
Pool Session
This is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to assess your progress and identify the exact steps needed to improve your swimming.
Each 90-minute session includes a 45-minute advanced video analysis, a pool-based correction segment with personalised drills to refine your technique, and a 45-minute consultation with our open water swimming coach to review your footage, discuss your performance, and map out the next steps toward achieving your perfect stroke.
