Learn to swim ASA

The British Gas ASA Learn to swim Pathway is an all-inclusive programme which takes the non swimmer from his or her first splash to developing confidence and competence in the water. The ASA, the National Governing body for swimming (NGB), first launched a National Learn to swim programme in 1997 (the National plan for teaching swimming) and as part of ongoing improvement to ensure all of the products the ASA distribute are in line with current thinking, the programme was updated in 2007and is now referred to as the British Gas ASA Learn to swim pathway.

The British Gas ASA Learn to Swim Pathway incorporates the following frameworks;

ASA Foundation Framework

ASA Learn to swim Framework (stages 1-7)

ASA Aquatic Skills Framework (stages 8-10)

If your children are budding lifeguards, then the Rookie Lifeguard Award developed by the Royal Lifesaving Society UK in conjunction with the ASA and the LTS, should be just what you are looking for.As well as offering parents the comfort of knowing their children are aware the dangers of swimming in open water, the Bronze, Silver and Gold stage awards ensure children have a solid safety education, and have learned rescue and resuscitation techniques.Each stage is sub-divided into three levels.. Your children can enter a course at any point during the stage and progress at his or her own speed.

The Rookie Lifeguard Programme also comes with the Water Safety Award, the Life Support Award and the Achievement Awards. There are also other bolt-on awards that can be achieved, such as Snorkelling, Paddle Board and Beach Awards.

The Rookie Lifeguard programme is the junior award scheme of the RLSS UK. For most children Rookie Lifeguard will be the first opportunity to explore water safety and alternative safe aquatic play.

The Rookie skills make Rookies aware of how to take better care of themselves, their family and friends, and give them the information they need to promote water safety in their day to day activities. The awards contain survival, rescue and sports skills as well as Life Support and water safety elements.

Rookie Lifeguard is primarily aimed at children aged 8 - 14 years although most of the skills can be taught to people of all ages. Starting with Stage 1 of the Bronze Award and progressing through to Stage 3 of the Gold Award, Rookie Lifeguard begins at an ability level suitable for swimmers who have just learned to swim and progresses to the level of performing Lifesaving tows.

Also part of the Rookie Lifeguard Programme are the Water Safety, Life Support and Bolt-on Awards. These Bolt-on Awards offer varied extra skills, wet and dry, that Rookies can achieve to push themselves further and provide encouragement between the core awards.

Rookie Lifeguard is part of the National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) developed by the Amateur Swimming Association although it can also be run as a stand-alone course by Lifesaving Clubs, Leisure Centres, Swim schools and as part of School swimming lessons. The Rookie Lifeguard Water Safety Award fulfils all of the Key Stage 2 water safety elements of the National Curriculum.
